2015 Shop Hop

I'm really happy to be part of the Southern Patchwork Shop Hop once again this year from 30th October to 14th November. Spend $10 at each shop and you receive a gift bag and go into the draw for one of five prize packs. It's a good chance to see what's available locally and support small family businesses. And it's fun! You can sign up at any of the shops. There are places left on the bus if you'd like to do the grand tour in one day on Saturday 7th Nov leaving New Town at 9am. Contact me or any of the shops for details.
Participating shops are Frangipani in Sandy Bay , Easy Sew in the city, Patchwork Cafe in New Norfolk, Timeless Designs in Huonville - and us at Kingston Beach
.

Old Bag Display

I'm putting on a display  simply called 'Old Bags!'. It will be  in the shop and runs  from  tomorrow (market day  10am - 3pm) until Saturday 26th September.  There will be a wide variety of  old and traditional Japanese bags, wallets and purses from my own collection (sorry not for sale) -  I think about 40 in total .  They range from tiny  saikumono decorative  chirimen silk bags through to well-used practical  indigo cotton kinchaku drawstring bags.  I'll post more pictures but I  hope you can come along for a look.

Winter Break

Every winter when the shop's a little quiet I take a week off just to have some time to myself and to catch up with jobs around the house.  So the shop will be closed from tomorrow (15th August ) and re-open on Tuesday 25th August.

I'm  planning a display of antique bags next month so I just got some more Japanese bag-making books in:

I hope everyone had a good Easter. I spent a little chunk of my break tidying up the rolls of kimono  fabric...

In Store... Boro and Obi

I'll be putting out more boro soon. Here are a couple of pieces that are in the shop at the moment and also online  here .   This is an old well patched futon cover panel..

I'm not sure if this piece has been used a  floor mat or possibly a kotatsu cover but it has lots of character...

I've been putting out some obi and hope to put out more soon. These aren't in my online shop but you're welcome to email me if you're interested in any of them...

In Store....

I'm always adding new fabric to the shop. I love this old lining fabric:

This is a beautiful piece of  indigo katazome with a wonderful handwoven texture:

A stunning double-width shibori lining silk:

Cheery yukata cotton on the roll:

And a couple of kimono silks on the roll:

I've got some new indigo quilting fabrics but there will be a limited supply of these - some of our other quilting fabrics in traditional patterns will run out even sooner. Unfortunately our supplier says they're just not popular anymore. I'm not sure why because they're timeless patterns and always popular in the shop:

Today I'm putting out some more small kokeshi dolls:

Including some 'creative kokeshi':

I love this Arimatsu shibori yukata:

This is a very sweet  netsuke:

In Store - Theatre Postcards

I've just put out a stack of these old theatre postcards. Most of them are simply glossy black and white photos that have been printed out with a 'postcard' backing. I don't know very much at all about Japanese  theatre but we sometimes have old photos in the shop and they're always fun - the costumes are wonderful. The actors are all male.
